A nature weekend in the Gironde: the complete guide

Sunset over a natural lake in the Gironde

Fancy switching off for a weekend? The Gironde is a nature destination that is still little known, offering far more than its famous vineyards. Lakes, forests, rivers, starry skies: here is our complete guide to organising a 100% nature weekend in the Gironde, far from the noise and the crowds.

Where to stay for a nature weekend in the Gironde?

The floating chalet: the ultimate experience

Sleeping on the water, in a floating chalet with no facing neighbours, is nature accommodation at its very best. At the Dahu Wake Park in Sablons, each chalet sits on a private 3-hectare lake. You fish from your terrace, you watch the wildlife along the spring-fed water, and you fall asleep lulled by the lapping of the waves. From €110/night.

The charming gîte by the lake

For groups or families, the Dahu Wake Park gîte (170 m², 6 people) offers full comfort with a panoramic view over the lake. Terrace, fireplace, absolute calm. From €210/night.

Other nature accommodation in the Gironde

Beyond the floating chalets, the Gironde offers yurts in Entre-Deux-Mers, treehouses in the Médoc, and tiny houses among the vines. See our selection of unusual stays.

What to do during a nature weekend in the Gironde?

1. Fish in a private lake

The Dahu Wake Park lake is home to carp, pike, zander, black bass and perch. No-kill fishing in a preserved setting. Beginners welcome. Fishing rates and information.

2. Hike and watch the wildlife

Around the lake, a waymarked trail lets you observe grey herons, kingfishers, dragonflies and red squirrels. Don't forget your binoculars. For walkers, the Flow Vélo and the greenways of the Gironde offer waymarked routes through forests and vineyards.

3. Explore the vineyards by bike

30 min from Dahu Wake Park, Saint-Émilion (UNESCO) is best discovered by bike. Peaceful roads between the grands crus, tastings at the châteaux, medieval lanes. Wine tourism is a way of life here.

4. Watch the tidal bore

From June to October, the wave of the tidal bore travels up the Dordogne at Saint-Pardon (Vayres), 20 min from the estate. A spectacular natural phenomenon that can be watched from the banks — or surfed by the most daring.

5. Stargaze

Far from any light pollution, the Domaine du Dahu offers an exceptionally clear sky. Lie down on the terrace of your chalet, and let the Milky Way put on a show.

When to go?

Each season has its charm in the Gironde:

  • Spring (April-June): ideal for nature, nesting birds, mild temperatures, wisteria in bloom
  • Summer (July-August): fishing at daybreak, long evenings on the terrace, warm starry nights — but book early
  • Autumn (September-October): grape harvest, blazing colours, tidal bore, magical light over the lake
  • Winter (November-February): cosy atmosphere, mist over the lake, low-season rates, a romantic weekend by the fire

Practical tips

  • Clothing: bring comfortable shoes for walking, and a fleece even in summer for evenings by the lake
  • Mosquitoes: good news — there are fewer here than in Libourne, and our guests from Libourne notice it themselves! The lake's wildlife and plants feed on them, nature is well made. A little repellent around 5 pm is enough; after that, simply enjoy the lake. Only the path along the forest edge, opposite the chalets, still keeps a few stubborn ones
  • Binoculars: the lake is a birdwatching spot, binoculars greatly enhance the experience
  • Booking: the estate is small (6 accommodations), so book several weeks in advance in high season
